Thanks to this discovery, it will now be easier to identify others with this condition.<\/p>\n<p>Blood group systems like ABO and Rh are well-known, but blood is more complex and matching across the other groups can be lifesaving. There are many other important blood group markers. Mismatches in rare groups like AnWj can cause severe transfusion reactions.<\/p>\n<p>This research enables better testing to detect individuals with this rare blood type, reducing the risk of complications.<\/p>\n<div id=\"checktheseout5\" class=\"checktheseout5\"><\/div>\n<p>The AnWj antigen was first discovered in 1972, but its genetic origin remained unknown until now.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ashpublications.org\/blood\/article-abstract\/144\/26\/2735\/517404\/Deletions-in-the-MAL-gene-result-in-loss-of-Mal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Published in the journal Blood<\/a>, the research reveals that AnWj is carried on a protein called Mal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"teads-ad\"><\/div>\n<p>Over 99.9% of people have the AnWj antigen because they produce full-length MAl protein on their red blood cells. In contrast, AnWj-negative individuals lack this protein due to deletions in the MAL gene.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that most people who are AnWj-negative have underlying health issues, such as blood disorders or certain cancers, that suppress the expression of the antigen.<\/p>\n<p>Only a few individuals are genetically AnWj-negative, including a family of Arab-Israeli descent.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers used whole exome sequencing, a technique that examines the protein-coding regions of DNA, to identify the deletions in the MAL gene responsible for the absence of AnWj.<\/p>\n<p>They confirmed their findings by reintroducing a normal MAL gene into cells, which restored the antigen.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Research Scientist Louise Tilley from IBGRL called this discovery a significant milestone after two decades of effort, highlighting the importance of teamwork and advanced genetic tools.<\/p>\n<p>Ash Toye from the University of Bristol emphasised how gene manipulation techniques played a crucial role in solving this long-standing puzzle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"edpara\">The discovery of the MAL blood group system is a step forward in improving care for patients with rare blood types and paves the way for better diagnostic tools and treatment options in the future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"dottedimg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have discovered the secret behind a very rare blood type called AnWj.
