In a recent address at the 20th anniversary gala of the China General Chamber of Commerce-USA (CGCC) in New York City, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, emphasized that tariffs and trade wars are ineffective in resolving disputes and cannot impede China’s progress. He stated, “Tariff threats would never work on the Chinese people. Instead, they would only undermine the foundation of China-U.S. counternarcotics and economic cooperation, and raise costs for American households and businesses.”<\/p>\n
Ambassador Xie highlighted China’s proactive measures in combating fentanyl production and trafficking, noting that China is the first country to officially schedule fentanyl-related substances as an entire category and enforce the strictest controls. He warned that imposing additional tariffs on China under the pretext of the fentanyl issue would be counterproductive.<\/p>\n
He further underscored the importance of a stable, healthy, and sustainable China-U.S. relationship for economic cooperation to thrive. Xie called on business communities to remain committed, seize opportunities, and support bilateral ties.<\/p>\n
This address comes amid heightened trade tensions following the U.S. administration’s recent imposition of a 10% tariff on all Chinese products, effective February 5, 2025. In response, China announced counter-tariffs of up to 15% on certain U.S. imports, set to begin on February 10. The Chinese foreign ministry has called for dialogue and consultation based on equality and mutual respect, emphasizing that unilateral tariffs are not the solution.<\/p>\n
