The attack came just a day after U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff rejected a ceasefire response by Hamas, a decision widely viewed among Palestinians as a green light for continued Israeli escalation.<\/p>\n

“Death Traps” Disguised as Aid Centers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The aid centers in question were operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a U.S.-backed initiative ostensibly established to deliver relief to besieged civilians. \u201cThis humiliating system forces desperate civilians to travel miles through bombed-out ruins to reach what effectively become kill zones,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s mass killing marks the second deadly assault<\/strong> on GHF-run aid centers within a single week. On May 27, Israeli forces opened fire on a similar crowd in Rafah, killing several. That incident, too, occurred after weeks of a complete blockade on humanitarian supplies.<\/p>\n

Footage released online has drawn comparisons between the Rafah distribution sites and some of the darkest chapters in modern history. Images of Palestinians penned into metal enclosures lined with barbed wire sparked global outrage, with some media outlets drawing parallels to the ghettos and internment camps of WWII Europe.<\/p>\n

Witkoff in the Spotlight<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steve Witkoff, the U.S. envoy overseeing negotiations in Gaza, has drawn harsh criticism for the timing and content of his diplomatic interventions. On Saturday, May 31, Hamas responded to his most recent ceasefire proposal with a counter-offer that included the release of Israeli captives in exchange for humanitarian guarantees and prisoner releases. That proposal, Hamas insists, was made in good faith.<\/p>\n

Instead of pursuing that path, Witkoff reportedly returned with a revised framework that Hamas said bore \u201cno resemblance\u201d to what had been agreed earlier. Witkoff swiftly labeled Hamas\u2019 position \u201ctotally unacceptable,\u201d a response that many believe emboldened Israel\u2019s military to resume its aggressive campaign in Rafah.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than securing peace, his statements signaled impunity,\u201d said Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, speaking to Al Jazeera. \u201cHe dismissed a real opportunity for de-escalation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Witkoff\u2019s plan lacked enforceable guarantees that Israel would uphold any ceasefire, something Palestinians have grown increasingly wary of after a previous truce was abandoned in March with U.S. backing.<\/p>\n

Political Calculations Over Human Lives<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Critics argue that the U.S. administration\u2019s unwavering support for Israel has contributed to the deterioration of conditions in Gaza, reducing diplomatic efforts to mere formalities while cementing impunity on the ground.
