Farmers in the Devanahalli region of Karnataka have been fighting unrelentingly for almost 2,000 days against the state government’s arbitrary seizure of their productive lands. What started out as a small-scale demonstration has grown into a representation of opposition to state-sponsored land grabs and corporate greed masquerading as “industrial development.”<\/p>\n

The communist and leftist movements in Nepal find great resonance in this struggle. Whether in feudal monarchies or neoliberal regimes, it reflects the struggles Nepali farmers have waged against exploitative land acquisition practices. The struggle of the Karnataka farmers is not only about land; it is also about defending food sovereignty, agrarian communities’ survival, and opposition to capitalist exploitation.<\/p>\n

The Struggle Against Forced Land Acquisition<\/strong>
\nIn Devanahalli Taluk, close to Bengaluru’s international airport, the Karnataka government has been trying to take 1,777 acres of farmland spread across 13 villages, first under the far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and now under the Congress party. Farmers and activists contend that the government’s claim that the land is required for a “defense and aerospace park” is just a front for real estate exploitation.<\/p>\n

The Land Acquisition Act of 2013, which requires 70\u201380% of landowners to consent to private projects, was circumvented by the government under the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Act (KIAD Act, 1966). Instead, the state forcibly seized land without the consent of farmers using the harsh KIAD Act.<\/p>\n

T. Yashavantha<\/strong>, general secretary of the\u00a0Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS)<\/strong>, a farmers’ union affiliated with the\u00a0All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS)<\/strong>, explains:<\/p>\n

“They have already acquired 6,000 acres for this so-called industrial park since 2014, but 90% of it lies vacant. No factories, no jobs\u2014just empty land handed over to real estate mafias. This is not development; this is loot.”<\/p>\n

Congress\u2019 Betrayal and the BJP\u2019s Fascist Handover<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Congress party, which came to power in 2023 promising to halt the land acquisition, has instead accelerated it. Farmers who voted for Chief Minister\u00a0Siddaramaiah<\/strong>\u00a0feel betrayed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the previous BJP government had already handed over hundreds of acres to\u00a0Chanakya University<\/strong>, an institution linked to the\u00a0Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)<\/strong>\u2014a fascist paramilitary organization. The land, worth\u00a0\u20b9300-400 crore<\/strong>, was given away for a mere\u00a0\u20b950 crore<\/strong>, exposing the crony capitalism at play.<\/p>\n

Now, the Congress government is facilitating luxury apartment projects by real estate giant\u00a0Brigade Group<\/strong>\u00a0on the same land meant for “industrial development.”<\/p>\n

Farmers\u2019 Lives at Stake<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For farmers like\u00a0Nanjappa<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Thimmarayappa<\/strong>, this land is not just property\u2014it is their livelihood, their heritage, and their future.<\/p>\n

“We grow mangoes, bananas, grapes, vegetables. We have poultry and dairy farms. This land feeds not just our families but also landless laborers who depend on us for work,”<\/em>\u00a0says Nanjappa.<\/p>\n

If the government succeeds, thousands of farmers will be pushed into\u00a0landlessness and urban slums<\/strong>, joining the millions of displaced peasants across India who become cheap labor for capitalist industries.<\/p>\n

A United Front of Workers, Women, and Oppressed Castes<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The farmers\u2019 resistance has drawn support from\u00a0trade unions, women\u2019s organizations, Dalit and Adivasi groups, artists, and intellectuals<\/strong>. When police brutally attacked protesters on\u00a0June 25<\/strong>, detaining women activists like\u00a0Varalakshmi<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU)<\/strong>, the movement only grew stronger.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M)<\/strong>\u00a0organized statewide protests, while the\u00a0Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM)<\/strong>\u2014which led the historic farmers\u2019 movement against Modi\u2019s farm laws\u2014extended solidarity.<\/p>\n

A New Model of Resistance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Unlike other land struggles where farmers settle for compensation, the Devanahalli farmers are fighting to\u00a0retain their land<\/strong>. As\u00a0Vijoo Krishnan<\/strong>\u00a0of AIKS stated:<\/p>\n

“This is a new model of resistance\u2014not just demanding fair compensation but defending the right to land itself.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Now, with the government signaling a possible retreat, the farmers remain vigilant. They have given the state an ultimatum:\u00a0“Reverse the acquisition or jail us all.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lessons for Nepal\u2019s Left and Farmers\u2019 Movements<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For Nepal\u2019s communist and leftist forces, this struggle holds critical lessons:<\/p>\n

    Unity Across Classes<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The alliance between farmers, workers, women, and oppressed castes shows the power of a united front against capitalist exploitation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Rejecting False Development<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The “industrial park” narrative is a fraud. Real development must prioritize food sovereignty and peasants\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Long-Term Resistance<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Victory does not come overnight. The Karnataka farmers\u2019 persistence for nearly\u00a02,000 days<\/strong>\u00a0proves that sustained struggle is key.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As Nepal faces its own battles against corporate land grabs\u2014whether for “infrastructure projects” or “foreign investment”\u2014the Karnataka movement stands as a beacon of resistance.<\/p>\n

    The farmers are on the verge of victory. But the fight is far from over\u2014not just in Karnataka, but across South Asia, where capitalism continues to displace the working masses.<\/strong><\/p>\n
