From being a monarchy to the status of a democratic republic in 2008, Nepal then went on to forge an inclusive constitution in 2015, promising a new era of stability and progress. This promise remains to be fulfilled. September 4, 2025, ban on social media ignited a Gen-Z-led insurrection, but this social media protest was merely the ignition that set the cumulative spark. The real blaze had been simmering for some time, fueled by chronic outrage at a patronage political economy that has still to yield honorable ways of living. This insurrection is the explosive unleashing of long-seething political-economic frustrations, laying bare profound generational and class fissures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its most determined troops are the youth of Nepal, a &#8220;globally-connected&#8221; generation that will not accept the pillaging of national resources, systemic corruption, and forced exile. They are appalled by the perennially high unemployment rate, at approximately 20.8%, sending hundreds of thousands of Nepalis overseas to work every year. The anger is also stoked by the naked unfairness symbolized by the &#8220;Nepo Kids&#8221; &#8211; children of the politicians who live extravagant lives and yet common people have a bleak employment market and increasing expenses. The protest against the regime is not so much a demand for new leaders; it is a fundamental demand for an open and responsive system that actually provides hope to its people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The uprising has resisted the old-timers who orchestrated the 1990 and 2006 political shifts. The uprising is decentralized, organized on-line through sites like Discord and Instagram, and has brought forth new, independent leaders. Prominent among them are Kathmandu Mayor-turned-rapper Balen Shah and the humanitarian non-political organization, Hami Nepal. These figures have resonated with the protesters since they fall outside the mainstream political parties. Although there is a receptiveness on the part of the mainstream political parties towards the formation of an interim government, already there exists resistance to dissolving parliament on the basis that all action must remain within the framework of the constitution. This struggle between a young generation demanding inherent change and an old guard committed to proven rules of the game is an existential question about the future of the youngest republic&#8217;s constitution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nepal&#8217;s geopolitical location, stuck between India and China and with Western powers like the U.S., guarantees that external forces have significant strategic stakes in the country. There is a heated debate about the place of such forces. While some speculate the anarchy is part of a &#8220;greater conspiracy&#8221; by &#8220;outside and unidentified actors&#8221; to install regime change, others assume that the protests are a spontaneous upwelling of widespread opposition. The youth movement itself has taken pains to remain impartial from such forces, boycotting talks when a monarchist leader was taken to the negotiating table by the army, indicating their commitment to a sovereign Nepal. There has been exploration of an interim government during the crisis, with former Chief Justice Sushila Karki and other clear and popular figure. Their arrival signals a broad desire for a clean, capable, and independent-of-the-status-quo leadership. At the same time, the linked of Hami Nepal with Barbara Foundation and Dalai Lama Groups has forced everyone to suspiciously look at the rise of Sudhan Gurung and company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resilience of the Nepali republic will rest on whether such an emerging political force capable of articulating the desires of the masses, specifically the youth and working class whose fears about joblessness are at the heart of this uprising. It must build a power program of actual social and economic transformation beyond the patronage of geopolitics and the reactionary forces which seek to occupy the space. There is an exit, and this is a time of profound possibility. The masses have shown power beyond measure. The test is in mobilizing this popular rage into a sustainable and autonomous political program. There is hope for Nepal, if the changes are institutionalized on the basis of constitution from the very beginning.
