Nepal’s Gen Z Protests Escalate: Army Deployed, Curfews in Multiple Cities, Death Toll Rises

Nepal is in turmoil as Gen-Z-led protests sweep across the country, intensifying into one of the largest youth-driven uprisings in recent years. Authorities have responded with curfews, mass detentions, and army deployment, but the movement shows little sign of slowing.

Casualties Mount Amid Crackdowns

At least 15 people are confirmed dead, including students and young activists, with 22 critically injured and more than 120 others hurt in clashes across Nepal. Security forces have used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and in some areas, live ammunition. Hospitals in Kathmandu, Jhapa, Pokhara, and Butwal are overwhelmed, while volunteer groups and activists have set up makeshift first-aid camps to treat the wounded.

Curfews Spread Beyond Kathmandu

  • Kathmandu: A sweeping curfew covers New Baneshwar, Maitighar, Tinkune, Singha Durbar, and surrounding zones.

  • Pokhara (Kaski District): DAO Kaski imposed prohibitory orders around Shahid Chowk, effectively locking down the city center.

  • Butwal & Bhairahawa (Rupandehi District): Authorities enforced bans on assemblies after protesters occupied major intersections.

  • Damak (Jhapa District): Fierce clashes left dozens injured after police opened fire.

  • Biratnagar, Chitwan, Nepalgunj: Demonstrations have expanded, with security forces struggling to keep pace.

What Do Protesters Want?

Though triggered by the sudden ban on 26 major social media platforms, protesters’ demands go far deeper:

  • End to corruption and nepotism in politics.

  • Equal access to quality education, healthcare, and jobs.

  • Accountability of political elites and their families, long accused of enjoying unchecked privileges.

  • Reversal of censorship, including the ban on social media platforms that are vital for communication, activism, and economic opportunity.

Protesters emphasize that their struggle is not simply about the right to scroll TikTok or post on X—it is about dismantling the entrenched system that protects the few at the cost of the many.

The protests have gained significant traction from students, young professionals, migrant workers’ families, and civil society groups. Artists, musicians, and online influencers have amplified the message, turning songs, poetry, and viral videos into protest tools. Trade unions and grassroots organizations have quietly expressed solidarity, pointing out that Gen Z’s grievances echo long-standing calls for social and economic justice.

In Kathmandu, protesters entered the restricted Parliament zone and set fire near its Gate No. 2—an act both daring and symbolic. Their chants echoed themes of freedom, fairness, and a demand to be heard.

The government has convened emergency meetings and extended curfews, hoping force will bring calm. But the protests show signs of evolving into a sustained movement. Across Nepal, young people are uniting under a banner of justice, equality, and change—demanding a future different from the one they inherited.

Whether the state chooses dialogue or repression will determine if this moment becomes a turning point in Nepal’s democratic journey—or the beginning of deeper unrest.
