Direct Strikes in Bab Al-Mandab Strait Heighten Regional Tensions

Yemen's Armed Forces Target Israeli-Linked Ships, Vow Solidarity with Palestine
Spokesman of the Yemeni Armed Forces Yahya Saree gives an address about the Yemeni attacks on Israeli ships.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Yemen’s naval forces, under Houthi command, carried out direct attacks on Israeli-linked ships in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait on December 3. The Yemeni Armed Forces, responding to the ongoing Israeli bombing of Gaza, declared the resumption of strikes against the Israeli occupation.

Brigadier-General Yahya Saree, the spokesperson for the Forces, confirmed the operation, emphasizing that it aligned with the demands of the Yemeni people and the “free people of our Arab and Islamic nation” to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their steadfast resistance. The targeted attacks were executed on the Unity Explorer and Ship No.9 vessels, both linked to Israeli interests.

Saree asserted that Yemen’s naval forces used a naval missile and drone in the operation, initiated after the Israeli ships disregarded warnings. The Yemeni Armed Forces expressed their commitment to preventing Israeli ships from navigating the Red Sea and the Arab Sea until the Israeli aggression against Gaza ceases.

The renewed attacks come after a seven-day ceasefire agreement, which Israel breached on December 1, intensifying aerial bombardments on Gaza and resulting in the death of 700 Palestinians within 24 hours. The Yemeni Armed Forces had temporarily halted their missile and drone attacks following the truce.

International Response and Accusations:

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement acknowledging four attacks on commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea, indicating that the USS Carney destroyed a drone launched from “Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.” While linking Iran to the attacks, CENTCOM pledged to consider appropriate responses in coordination with international allies.

The Yemeni Armed Forces, emphasizing the strategic importance of their actions, warned that all Israeli-affiliated ships violating outlined statements would be legitimate targets. The move follows the Houthi capture of the Israeli ship “Galaxy Leader” on November 19, which drew condemnation from the G7 alliance.

In response, Houthi spokesperson Muhammad Abdel Salam reaffirmed the operation’s connection to Palestinian solidarity. He criticized the G7’s support for Israel’s “self-defense,” labeling it a violation of international law. Salam emphasized that the fate of the captured ship was tied to the choices of the Palestinian resistance against Israeli aggression.

Geopolitical Implications:

Analysts highlight the strategic significance of the blockade imposed by Yemen’s Armed Forces, citing potential repercussions for international trade. The Bab Al-Mandab Strait, measuring less than 25 kilometers in width, plays a critical role in the transit of petroleum and natural gas from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden via the Red Sea.

As the situation unfolds, global attention is turning to the region, with observers closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical landscape and the potential impact on international commerce.
