In a powerful display of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, activists in Malaysia organized the “Blockade for Palestine” demonstration outside the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. The week-long protest, held from December 26 to 31, saw hundreds of participants braving adverse weather conditions and police obstructions to voice their condemnation of Israel’s war crimes and the US’ continued support.
The protest, orchestrated by the Palestine Solidarity Secretariat (SSP), a coalition of 48 groups representing political parties, civil society organizations, and youth movements, aimed to draw attention to the ongoing Israeli conflict in Gaza. Protesters, chanting slogans such as “Bebas, bebas! Bebas Palestine” (Free, free! Free Palestine) and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” demanded an end to the bloodshed and the implementation of UN resolutions for a ceasefire.
Despite facing challenges, including rain and police interference, the sit-in continued for six days outside the US Embassy, with Palestinian and Malaysian flags flying high, and placards denouncing the embassy as a “nest for terrorists.”
On January 2, the Malaysian government escalated its support for the Palestinian cause by endorsing South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The case, which accuses Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza, was hailed by Malaysia as a “timely and tangible step towards legal accountability for Israel’s atrocities.”
In an exclusive interview with Peoples Dispatch, Tian Chia, a prominent social activist and the Spokesperson for the SSP in Kuala Lumpur, shed light on the significance of the “Blockade for Palestine.” Chia, who also served as the vice president of the People’s Justice Party and as an MP for a decade, emphasized the unwavering commitment of the Malaysian people to stand up against injustice and support the oppressed on the international stage.
The “Blockade for Palestine” not only symbolizes Malaysia’s condemnation of Israel’s actions but also reflects the nation’s call for global accountability and justice for the Palestinian people. As the world continues to grapple with the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Malaysia stands as a beacon of support for those seeking freedom and justice in Palestine.
