Nationwide ‘Hands Off!’ Protests Sweep the United States: Citizens Rally Against New Administration’s Policies

On April 5, 2025, a wave of “Hands Off!” protests surged across all 50 U.S. states, uniting thousands of citizens in opposition to the policies of President Donald Trump and his advisor, Elon Musk. Organized in over 1,200 locations by more than 150 groups—including civil rights organizations, labor unions, LGBTQ+ advocates, veterans, and election activists—these demonstrations represent a significant public outcry against recent governmental actions.

Key Issues Fueling the Protests

Protesters voiced their dissatisfaction with several critical policy decisions:

  • Government Spending Cuts and Layoffs: Elon Musk, as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), implemented aggressive measures resulting in the layoffs of approximately 280,000 federal employees. These actions have raised concerns about the dismantling of essential public services and the concentration of power among wealthy elites.

  • Immigration Enforcement: The administration’s recent immigration raids targeted international students at American universities, leading to visa revocations and deportation proceedings. Critics argue that these actions suppress free speech and tarnish America’s reputation as a global education leader.

  • Tariff Policies and Economic Impact: The imposition of a 10% blanket tariff on all imported goods, along with additional tariffs on 60 countries, has led to significant market volatility. Major indexes like the S&P 500 experienced substantial losses, causing widespread concern among investors and the general public.

International Solidarity

The “Hands Off!” movement has garnered international attention, with solidarity protests occurring in major cities such as London, Paris, and Berlin. These global demonstrations highlight widespread concern over U.S. policies that have far-reaching implications beyond its borders.

Political Responses

In Washington, D.C., prominent figures, including New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, addressed the crowds, emphasizing the need for unity and resistance against policies perceived as detrimental to democracy and civil rights.

From our standpoint, these protests underscore the adverse effects of neoliberal policies that prioritize corporate interests over the welfare of the working class. The significant reduction in public sector employment and the aggressive stance on immigration are seen as moves that exacerbate social inequalities and undermine the principles of social justice.

Furthermore, the influence of billionaires like Elon Musk in governmental roles is viewed with concern, as it may lead to the erosion of democratic institutions and the marginalization of ordinary citizens. Nepali communists express solidarity with American workers and marginalized communities, advocating for a global movement towards equitable policies that prioritize the needs of the many over the interests of the few.

The “Hands Off!” protests represent a pivotal moment of civic engagement in the United States, reflecting deep-seated concerns over the current administration’s policy directions. The movement’s resonance both domestically and internationally signals a collective demand for policies that uphold social protections, economic fairness, and human rights.
