In yet another act of economic warfare against the Global South, former U.S. President Donald Trump—representing the interests of American monopoly capital—has announced a brutal 50% tariff on all Brazilian imports starting August 2025. This reactionary measure, disguised as a response to “unfair trade,” is in reality a blatant attack on Brazil’s sovereignty and a desperate attempt to bully progressive governments resisting U.S. hegemony.
The U.S. has a long history of using tariffs and sanctions as weapons against nations that refuse to bow to its imperialist agenda. From the blockade on Cuba to the economic strangulation of Venezuela, Washington has consistently sought to destabilize progressive movements in Latin America. Trump’s latest move follows this tradition, targeting Brazil—a nation that, under President Lula da Silva, has sought to reclaim its independence from neoliberal subjugation.
Trump’s letter to President Lula, dripping with arrogance, openly defends the fascistic former President Jair Bolsonaro—a known enemy of Brazil’s working class—while attacking the Brazilian Supreme Court for holding Bolsonaro accountable for his crimes. This is not about “free trade”; it is about punishing Brazil for daring to challenge U.S. domination.
Trump claims Brazil’s trade policies are “unfair,” yet the U.S. has maintained a trade surplus with Brazil for over a decade. The real unfairness lies in the exploitative terms imposed by imperialist powers, forcing developing nations into dependency while plundering their resources. The U.S. fears Brazil’s growing alliances with BRICS nations and its resistance to neocolonial trade practices.
This 50% tariff is economic warfare, plain and simple. It is designed to cripple Brazil’s economy, intimidate other Global South nations, and reinforce U.S. monopoly capital’s grip over international trade.
President Lula has called an emergency meeting with key ministers, including Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, to craft a response. Brazil must not yield to this aggression. Progressive forces across Latin America and the world must stand in solidarity with Brazil against this imperialist bullying.
Senator Jaques Wagner of the Workers’ Party (PT) rightly condemned Trump’s move, declaring: “Brazil will not be anyone’s backyard!” This is the spirit of resistance that all oppressed nations must embrace.
The peoples of Nepal, who have long suffered under imperialist domination, understand the stakes. We must expose this latest act of U.S. aggression and stand with Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, and all nations fighting for true economic sovereignty.
Down with U.S. Imperialism!
Long Live International Solidarity!
