At Balkhu, UML youth wing cadres and Prasai supporters fight.

After the UML cadres arrived in Balkhu during a motorcycle rally, Prasai’s followers threw stones at them.

On Thursday, during a rally at Balkhu in Kathmandu, followers of notorious businessman Durga Prasai and members of the CPN-UML youth wing got into a fight.

After the UML cadres arrived in Balkhu during a motorcycle rally, Prasai’s followers threw stones at them. Prasai supporters also vandalized the demonstrators’ vehicles and those parked at the side of the road.

The police have brought the situation under control.

On Thursday, there will be separate rallies focused on Kathmandu by the UML and Prasai. While supporters of Prasai have moved their demonstrations to Balkhu, the former are holding theirs at Koteshwar Tinkune.

The two groups’ demonstrations caused a few hours’ worth of traffic chaos in Kathmandu. To prevent traffic disruption in the locations where the demonstrators have assembled in huge numbers, police have redirected vehicles from specific spots.

Since both sides intended to stage their shows of strength in the same locations, the Maitighar to Baneshwar road segment was declared off-limits to protests for a month earlier this week by the Kathmandu district government. They were instructed to hold the protests outside of the ring road.

The Lalitpur district administration decided to follow suit and forbid protests in specific districts for a period of three months.

There has been a clash between the Durga Prasai group and the police in Balkhu, Kathmandu. When the protestors tried to break through the police cordon and go towards Kalimati, the police used force to throw tear gas and water cannons. After the police used force, the protesters threw bricks and stones at the police.
