Aircraft catches fire at Japan’s Haneda airport, January 2, 2024

A Japan Airlines aircraft was engulfed in flames at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday after a possible collision with a Coast Guard aircraft, with the airline saying that all 379 passengers and crew had been evacuated.

According to NHK, one person aboard the Coast Guard aircraft escaped, while the remaining five are unaccounted for.

Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed the aircraft erupt in flames as it skidded down the tarmac and fire crews feverishly trying to extinguish the fire.

The Coast Guard said it was investigating the possibility that one of its aircraft collided with the passenger jet.

Nippon News Network reported citing the Tokyo Fire Department saying that the Japan Airlines flight, an Airbus A350 aircraft, which departed from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido Prefecture just after 4 p.m. local time on Tuesday, collided with an aircraft from the Japan Coast Guard.
