The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1, occurred at 6:50 AM local time, with its epicenter located in Dinggye County, Tibet, approximately 75 kilometers northeast of Mount Everest.
The quake’s shallow depth of 10 kilometers resulted in strong shaking felt across most parts of Nepal, particularly from the eastern to central regions, including the Kathmandu Valley. Residents in Kathmandu reported significant tremors, prompting many to evacuate buildings and seek safety outdoors.
In Tibet, the earthquake had devastating effects, with at least 53 people confirmed dead and 62 others injured. Rescue operations are underway, with approximately 1,500 fire and rescue workers deployed to search for survivors amid the rubble.
In response to the earthquake, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli urged citizens to remain alert and adopt safety measures. He emphasized the importance of preparedness, noting the recent seismic activities in the region.
