Latest Update on Recent Earthquake: Death Toll Rises to 95

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in the city of Xigaze, located in southwest China’s Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, at 9:05 a.m. on Tuesday. As of 3 p.m. Beijing time, the death toll has risen to 95, and another 130 people have been reported injured, according to local officials.

On the same earthquake of the Tibet region of China near the Nepal border. The tremors from this earthquake were strongly felt across Nepal and in parts of India and Bangladesh. While it caused significant destruction in China, there have been no reports of major damage or casualties in Nepal. We are safe.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive rescue efforts to save lives and minimize casualties following the magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck Dingri County in Xigaze City, southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, on Tuesday morning.

In his capacity as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi emphasized the need for utmost efforts to treat the injured and prevent secondary disasters.

He also directed authorities to properly resettle affected residents and manage the aftermath effectively. Key priorities include:

  • Strengthening earthquake monitoring and early warning systems.
  • Promptly allocating emergency rescue supplies.
  • Accelerating the repair of damaged infrastructure.
  • Ensuring residents’ basic needs are met.
  • Guaranteeing a safe and warm winter for those impacted.

The directive underscores the importance of swift and coordinated action to support affected communities during this crisis.
