Freedom Flotilla’s New Mission ‘Handala’ Sets Sail for Gaza: Solidarity with Starving Children Under Israeli Siege

Trade Unionists, MPs, and Activists Defy Israeli Blockade to Deliver Aid and Demand Justice for Palestine

Rome, Italy – In a bold act of defiance against Israel’s brutal siege on Gaza, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition is launching its latest mission, Handala, today from Italy. The ship, carrying vital humanitarian aid including baby formula and medicines, aims to break the illegal blockade that has left Palestinian children starving to death under Israel’s genocidal war.

The Handala—named after the iconic Palestinian cartoon character who turns his back on injustice—will carry 18 crew members, including prominent international figures like U.S. labor organizer Christian Smalls, French MEP Emma Fourreau, and MP Gabrielle Cathala. Their mission is not just about delivering aid but exposing the world’s complicity in Israel’s crimes.

Gaza’s Children: The Forgotten Victims

Since Israel sabotaged the March ceasefire and intensified its blockade, Gaza’s children have faced unimaginable suffering. Over 50,000 Palestinian children have been killed, injured, or orphaned since October 2023, with nearly a million displaced. Many now face famine, disease, and targeted Israeli attacks while waiting in line for food.

“The children of Gaza have lived their entire lives under siege,” said Michele Borgia, spokesperson for Freedom Flotilla Italy. “This mission is for them—to show that the world has not abandoned them, even if their governments have.”

In a touching gesture, children from Puglia, Italy—the first region to officially cut ties with Israel—have sent drawings for Gaza’s children, which will be carried aboard the Handala as a symbol of solidarity.

A Political Challenge to Western Complicity

Critics, including Israel, often mock the Flotilla’s limited supplies, asking, “What difference can one ship make?” But Borgia fires back: “When we sent thousands of tons of aid before, Israel blocked it too. This is about breaking the silence, not just the siege.”

The Flotilla’s mission is a direct challenge to Western governments—including Italy—that continue arming Israel while ignoring its war crimes. “Our ministers shake hands with [ICC-wanted war criminal] Netanyahu but say nothing for Palestine,” Borgia said.

Labor Unions Join the Fight

U.S. labor leader Christian Smalls, aboard the Handala, condemned U.S. unions for their silence on Gaza: “Our labor organizations, meant to fight for justice, are complicit in genocide.” He called for unions to block arms shipments to Israel and demand an immediate ceasefire.

Across Europe, rank-and-file workers are pushing unions to take stronger stances—mirroring the Flotilla’s grassroots resistance. “Governments fail, so the people act,” Borgia declared.

What’s Next?

Despite Israel’s violent history of attacking Flotilla ships—like the recent abduction of the Madleen’s crew—the coalition remains undeterred. More ships are being prepared, and the movement is growing.

“Palestinians urge us to keep speaking out,” Borgia said. “And we will—until Palestine is free.”
